Easter

When it comes to religious holidays, I am always trying to find ways to focus on the true meaning of the day with my kids.  When I was growing up, the Easter Bunny came every Easter morning and brought a basket full of goodies; loads of candy, small toys, and complete with green plastic grass.  Later we would do an egg hunt, a way to collect even more candy.  What kid wouldn't love all of that, right? But what lesson do I get from that?  That the meaning of Easter is bunnies, eggs, toys, and candy?  I don't remember any Easter lessons, though I'm sure we had them.  I know that eventually I understood the point, and that as an adult I appreciate it now, but why should we have to wait to be an adult before we truly get it?  So we don't do Easter baskets, although we do an egg hunt some time before Easter day. We also have a big dinner on Easter.  We try to have an Easter lesson for FHE.  And where finances allow, we buy them a set of new church clothes.  Here is another tradition we have had with our kids...

Empty Tomb Rolls
Teaching kids about the true meaning of Easter with Empty Tomb Rolls is easy and makes a lasting impact...and they taste good too!
Ingredients
  • 1 batch bread dough
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 8 large marshmallows
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Prepare muffin pan (preferably jumbo muffin pan) with non-stick cooking stray.
  2. Separate dough into eight pieces and set aside. Combine sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl.
  3. Dip each marshmallow into butter, then roll in cinnamon-sugar and place on a flattened piece of dough. Till and pinch dough around marshmallow, sealing all edges. Make sure to seal well or all the marshmallow will escape.
  4. Dip tops of dough into the remaining butter and then into the cinnamon-sugar. Place roll with the sugar side up into prepared muffin cups.
  5. Bake at 375 degrees for 13 - 15 minutes. Eat warm.
  6. Read the Easter story from the Bible found in Matthew 27-28, Mark 15-16, Luke 23-24, and/or John 19-20. If you are not familiar with the Bible the story is recounted by these four men...the story is virtually the same but is found in these four places in the Bible.
  7. Jesus —marshmallow
  8. After Jesus died on the cross he was wrapped in linen— roll in butter and cinnamon
  9. Jesus put into tomb — crescent roll dough
  10. rd day Jesus has risen and no longer in tomb — open cooked roll to find no marshmallow
